Emily, your post this week was so well done. You gave me such a great overview of what we learned about this week. I really liked the quote you used, “the commercial weaponization of information” in Martin Hirst’s interview. I agree that I think I can find my way around fake news, but as I scroll through TikTok or Instagram I listen to anyone talk about what foods to eat, what tools to use, sometimes without fact checking. In today’s world of constant flow of information I find it really challenging to research every piece of content I read. My family tends to share outrageous stories from facebook and it usually reminds me that I need to pay attention to the content I share. I also love that you included Hannah’s post and brought up the term ‘cancle culture’ as I find this very risky for my future employment. Overall, great post this week, I look forward to reading more of your work!
Hannah, you bring up such good points in your blog post. I completely agree that COVID-19 was a target ground for fake news. This is a great point to relate to this week’s topic. I also enjoy that you wrote on ‘cancel culture and think that media literacy would help for certain peoples digital identities. I also liked that you brought up Julie Smith’s interview and touched on Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s use of social media to gain votes, as a lot of political leaders do this. Overall, great job this post is fantastic at giving the viewers a good understanding of what media literacy is and how we can use it.
