Materials and Tools

This week I am continuing to gather all embroidery materials and tools and began researching different techniques and types of embroidery stitches to use. In addition to this, I also went through my closet and got rid of clothing that I can reuse and repair with embroidery techniques. I want to make sure this passion project follows my values of being sustainable and environmentally friendly, so I am planning on only reusing items in my closet or shopping second-hand for clothing that I can restyle and repair.

The materials needed:

  • 3 embroidery hoops, all different sizes
  • 100 different colours of thread
  • 4 embroidery needle sizes
  • Scissors
  •  Clothing to practice on.
  • Optional: Heat erasable pen

I found all of these tools at Micheals, however, a more affordable place could be Walmart, Fabric Land, or second hand.

Types of stitches:

  1. Running Stitch: Basic stitch, the needle is used in and out of the material and equal distance.

  2. Back Stitch: Basic stitch, where stitches are made backward to connect thread to appear as a line.

  3. Split Stitch: Intermediate stitch, where the stitch is made back through an existing stitch to appear chain-like.

  4. Stem Stitch: Intermediate Stitch, where needle performs a running stitch and then goes halfway back through the stitch to create a twist.

Overall, I learned a basic understanding of the types of stitching and developed a beginner understanding of the embroidery world. I hope to start a design for next week and work with these stitches to incorporate a beginner design.
